Alexandra sits at the confluence of the Clutha/Mata-Au and Manuherikia rivers, with orchards spread across the flats below dry, rocky hills. Look up and you will spot schist tors, old gold-mining scars and the town's illuminated hillside clock. Come in the evening and the whole valley seems to catch fire.
About Alexandra
Central Otago is New Zealand's only region with a truly continental climate - scorching summers, hard frosty winters - and Alexandra sits right in the middle of it. The town grew up around 1860s gold mining, and old diggings and stone ruins still mark the hillsides above the rivers, watched over by a large illuminated clock built into the hillside. In Fly South, Alexandra is worth reaching in the late afternoon: fly the braided river valleys as the light turns the schist tors gold and copper, then climb over the orchards and vineyards that now fill the old goldfield terraces.
