Arthur'S Pass National Park
Arthur's Pass carries the TranzAlpine railway and State Highway 73 through a sharp break in the Southern Alps. Watch dry Canterbury tussock turn to dripping West Coast beech forest, then look for the Otira Viaduct and Devil's Punchbowl Falls. Kea often patrol the village and car parks, adding a little mischief to the mountain stop.

Established in 1929, Arthur's Pass protects a landscape shaped by scree slopes, beech forest and one of the steepest railway grades in the country, including the Otira Viaduct. Keep an eye out for kea, the mountain parrots famous for their curiosity, often seen near the village and car parks. In Fly South, the pass rewards a slow, twisting route: follow the road and railway as they thread between steep valley walls, watch the vegetation change abruptly as you cross the main divide, and look for the thin white line of Devil's Punchbowl Falls dropping through the forest.
