About Canterbury Plains
The plains run roughly 200 kilometres along the eastern coast of the South Island, fed by the Waimakariri, Rakaia and Rangitata rivers, whose wide gravel beds still shift course after heavy rain. Long rows of macrocarpa and poplar shelterbelts break the farmland into a giant grid, planted to protect crops from the region's strong nor'west winds. In Fly South, this is the place for long, level, high-speed runs: pick a shelterbelt line and follow it for kilometres, then look west, where the flat plains end abruptly against the wall of the Southern Alps.
