Fly South / Aotearoa New Zealand
Central Otago
Central Otago has a sun-bleached, big-sky beauty that feels closer to a western film than the usual idea of New Zealand. You fly over tawny hills, weathered schist tors, old goldfields and rivers cutting through broad valleys. There is a wonderful sense of space here: raw, warm and quietly cinematic.
About Central Otago
This is the only part of the country with a true continental climate, and it shows: hot dry summers, icy winters, and hillsides worn down to bare rock and golden tussock. Gold rushes in the 1860s left the region scattered with mining relics, and the old miners' and railway routes now form the Otago Central Rail Trail. Central Otago is also serious wine country, particularly for Pinot Noir. In Fly South, this landscape rewards low, late-afternoon flying - the schist ridges and dry valleys light up gold and copper as the sun drops, and long shadows make every fold in the land easy to read.
