Cromwell
Cromwell sits where Lake Dunstan bends through Central Otago, ringed by orchards, vineyards and bare schist ranges. The old gold-rush town was partly flooded when the Clyde Dam was built, and its historic precinct still sits beside the water. Come for stone fruit, cellar doors and the easy routes toward Queenstown, Wānaka and Alexandra.
About Cromwell
The original goldfield-era town of Cromwell lies partly submerged beneath Lake Dunstan, created when the Clyde Dam was built in the 1980s; a giant sculpture of stone fruit at the town's edge marks it as one of the country's major orchard districts. From here, roads and valleys lead naturally toward Queenstown, Wānaka and the wider Central Otago interior. In Fly South, Cromwell is a useful crossroads: follow the pale waters of Lake Dunstan between the orchards and vineyards, then pick a direction - the mountains around Queenstown, the open basin toward Alexandra, or the alpine country north toward Wānaka.
