Doubtful Sound / Patea
Patea / Doubtful Sound is a vast Fiordland fiord reached by crossing Lake Manapōuri and the Wilmot Pass. Its long arms of dark water run beneath rainforest walls, steep waterfalls and cloud-wrapped mountains, with boat cruises offering a rare way in. It is quieter and much larger than nearby Milford Sound.
About Doubtful Sound / Patea
Captain Cook named it Doubtful Harbour because he doubted he'd be able to sail back out against the wind - he never actually entered it. Its many arms wind far back into the mountains, and Fiordland's underground Manapōuri Power Station, one of the largest hydro stations in the country, sits hidden inside a mountain nearby. In Fly South, patience pays off here: follow the long waterway deep into its folds, watch for waterfalls appearing out of the cloud on the steep walls, and treat the ever-changing weather as part of the scenery rather than something to fly around.
