Farewell Spit is New Zealand's longest sand spit, a narrow golden curve reaching into the Tasman Sea above Golden Bay. Tides reshape its sandbanks and draw thousands of wading birds and seabirds to this protected refuge. Follow its striking arc to the lighthouse at the far tip, with open ocean on one side and tidal flats on the other.
About Farewell Spit
Farewell Spit is an internationally significant wildlife refuge for wading birds and seabirds, and its shifting sandbanks have also made it a notorious site for whale strandings over the years. A lighthouse marks its outermost point, looking out over open water on one side and the sheltered flats of Golden Bay on the other. In Fly South, the spit is one of the clearest shapes on the whole map: trace its narrow arc all the way to the tip, then turn south into Golden Bay, where the coastline folds back into hills and forest.
