Gore

Gore is a Southland town on the Mataura River, surrounded by green paddocks and rolling farmland. It is known as the Brown Trout Capital of the World and hosts the Gold Guitars country-music awards each year. The Hokonui Hills nearby add old whisky-making stories to an easy inland stop.

About Gore

The Mataura River running through Gore has such a reputation among fly fishers that the town calls itself the Brown Trout Capital of the World, and each year it hosts New Zealand's Gold Guitars country music awards. The Hokonui Hills nearby were once notorious for illicit whisky-making during prohibition. In Fly South, Gore is a calm inland starting point: follow the Mataura through the patchwork of Southland farmland, then head west toward the mountains or south toward Invercargill and the coast.
