Greymouth
Greymouth sits where the Māwhera / Grey River meets the Tasman Sea, with long beaches on one side and forested foothills on the other. Gold, coal and pounamu shaped its early history, while the TranzAlpine train still finishes here after crossing the Alps. It is a useful base for following the river inland or exploring the weather-heavy coast.
About Greymouth
Built on a history of coal mining and gold, and long an important source of pounamu, or greenstone, Greymouth is also the western terminus of the TranzAlpine, one of the great scenic train journeys in the world. In Fly South, the town sits at a natural junction: follow the river inland to see it narrow between forested foothills, or stay low along the coast, where beaches, lagoons and Tasman Sea weather roll in one after another.
