Fly South / Aotearoa New Zealand

Haast Pass / Tioripatea

Tioripatea / Haast Pass is the lowest main road crossing of the Southern Alps, linking Wānaka with the West Coast. The route passes the vivid Blue Pools, Thunder Creek Falls and rivers that change from dry inland valleys to wet rainforest. It is one of the South Island's great scenic drives, and a brilliant flight corridor too.

About Haast Pass / Tioripatea

The name Tioripatea means 'the path is clear,' and the pass earns it: the landscape shifts quickly from dry inland tussock country to dense, wet West Coast forest over a relatively short distance, with the Blue Pools and Thunder Creek Falls sitting right beside the road. In Fly South, Haast Pass is an easy, scenic transition flight - follow the winding river valleys as the vegetation thickens and the air gets wetter, and use it as a natural link between the alpine lakes of Wānaka and the wild West Coast beyond.
