Haast
Haast is a small settlement where the broad Haast River reaches South Westland's long, wild coast. Nearby wetlands, river flats and empty beaches sit within the Te Wāhipounamu World Heritage Area, while Jackson Bay lies farther south. It is the last real stop before the West Coast becomes properly remote.
About Haast
This corner of the country feels like the edge of the map, and much of it is protected within the Te Wāhipounamu World Heritage Area. South of Haast lies Jackson Bay, the southernmost settlement on the West Coast and the site of a failed 19th-century farming venture, now little more than a wharf and a handful of houses. In Fly South, Haast is a place to slow down: follow the broad river mouth out to the coast, watch the weather build over some of the most exposed and untamed country on the map, then decide whether to push on south or turn back toward the mountains.
