Hokitika
Hokitika is a historic gold-rush town with a wide driftwood beach and a strong pounamu-carving tradition. Its little centre is good for galleries and cafés, while the nearby Hokitika Gorge is famous for startlingly turquoise water. The Southern Alps rise quickly behind town, giving every trip inland a dramatic finish.
About Hokitika
During the 1860s gold rush, Hokitika was briefly one of the busiest ports in the country; today it's better known for jade carving and the annual Wildfoods Festival. Just inland, Hokitika Gorge is known for water so brilliantly turquoise it looks artificial. In Fly South, the town is a good spot to see the West Coast's tilt toward the sea clearly: the coastline is broad and weathered, the rivers run pale with glacial silt, and the Southern Alps rise sharply inland behind a fringe of dense forest.
