KaikōUra Peninsula

Kaikōura Peninsula is where the Seaward Kaikōura Range rises almost straight out of the Pacific. A deep offshore canyon brings nutrient-rich water close to shore, supporting whales, dolphins, seals and albatross. Circle the peninsula for the full view of snow-streaked mountains, rocky coast and open ocean.

About Kaikōura Peninsula

A deep offshore canyon close to the peninsula brings cold, nutrient-rich water near the surface, which is why Kaikōura is one of the few places in the world with resident sperm whales year-round, alongside dolphins, seals and albatross. A major 2016 earthquake lifted parts of this coastline by several metres in an instant. In Fly South, circle the peninsula for the full effect: ocean on one side, farmland at the base, and the sharp, snow-streaked range crowding in from behind, closer to the sea than almost anywhere else in the country.
