Lake Coleridge
Lake Coleridge is a high-country lake surrounded by tussock slopes, pale riverbeds and the Torlesse Range. Its 1914 hydro station was one of New Zealand's earliest, adding a small piece of engineering history to the exposed landscape. Fishing, boating and the nearby Rakaia Gorge make it a good Canterbury detour.
About Lake Coleridge
The power station here dates to 1914, among the earliest in the country, and the lake remains popular for fishing and boating despite its exposed, wind-shaped setting. The braided Rakaia River and its gorge lie close by, along with the Torlesse Range. In Fly South, Lake Coleridge has the wide-open, windswept feel of the high country: use the water as a centre point, then loop out over the surrounding ridges and pale grasslands.
