Lake HāWea
Lake Hāwea is a long glacial lake with dry golden hills on one shore and mountain country at its northern head. The lake is separated from greener Lake Wānaka by the narrow strip called The Neck, making an easy scenic loop between the two. Its open water is popular for boating, fishing and simply watching the weather move through.
About Lake Hāwea
Raised by a dam for hydroelectric power, Lake Hāwea has a drier, more open feel on its eastern shore than the greener country around Wānaka just next door, despite the two lakes sitting almost side by side. In Fly South, follow its length toward the mountains at its head, then compare the two lakes directly - Hāwea's dry golden shoreline against Wānaka's softer green, separated by barely any distance at all.
