Lake Manapōuri / Moturau is a Fiordland lake scattered with forested islands, narrow inlets and steep dark ranges. Boats cross it to reach Doubtful Sound, and the underground Manapōuri Power Station sits deep inside the mountain nearby. It is a beautiful first taste of the intricate water-and-forest country beyond Te Anau.

Beneath the lake, hidden inside a mountain, sits the Manapōuri Power Station, one of the largest hydroelectric stations in the country and the reason boats cross the lake daily on their way to Doubtful Sound. The shoreline remains almost entirely undeveloped native forest.
