Lake Pukaki
Lake Pukaki is a brilliant turquoise glacial lake with Aoraki / Mount Cook rising at the far end of the valley. Its colour comes from fine rock flour carried down from the glaciers, and the lakeshore is one of the South Island's most photographed drives. Stop at the lookouts, then follow the water north toward Mount Cook Village.

The colour and the mountain backdrop combine to make Pukaki one of the most photographed lakes in the country, and its water also feeds a series of hydro canals as part of the Waitaki power scheme. In Fly South, even a simple pass down the lake feels dramatic - especially late in the day, when snow on the distant peaks catches the last light above the impossibly bright water.
