Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo is a bright turquoise lake beneath the Two Thumb Range, with the stone Church of the Good Shepherd on its shore. The town sits in an International Dark Sky Reserve, making stargazing and the Mount John Observatory major attractions after sunset. In summer, lupins add a wash of colour around the lake edge.

About Lake Tekapo

The small stone Church of the Good Shepherd sits right on the lakeshore, and the Mount John Observatory above town takes advantage of some of the clearest night skies in the world. In summer, wild lupins add colour along the lake edges. In Fly South, Tekapo changes completely with the light: a clean, graphic scene of water and tussock by day, and at dusk, an open sky that becomes the real landmark as the mountains fade to silhouette.
