Lake Wakatipu twists through the Queenstown mountains in a series of dramatic blue bends. Its shape gives every bay and headland a fresh reveal, with peaks rising close on either side. Māori tradition tells of a sleeping giant beneath its waters, which somehow suits the lake's restless grandeur.

Local legend explains its unusual S-shape as the outline of a sleeping giant; more prosaically, it's one of the deepest lakes in the country, and the historic steamship TSS Earnslaw still carries passengers across it. Queenstown sits at one end and Glenorchy at the other. In Fly South, the lake gives an obvious route: follow the water through its bends, pass beneath the Remarkables, and let the narrow shape make the surrounding mountains feel especially tall and close.
