Mackenzie Basin

The Mackenzie Basin is a huge bowl of golden tussock, glacier-fed water and extraordinary light. Lakes gleam between the ranges while braided rivers make delicate silver patterns across the floor. It is one of those rare landscapes where the space itself is the attraction.

About Mackenzie Basin

It holds three of the country's most photographed lakes - Tekapo, Pukaki and Ōhau - along with New Zealand's largest area of tussock grassland, and it's protected as an International Dark Sky Reserve for its exceptionally clear night skies. In Fly South, this is a landscape built for scale and colour: fly low over the long dry grasses and river fans, or climb for the full pattern of hydro canals and lakes that makes the Mackenzie one of the most recognisable stretches of the whole map.
