Captain Cook anchored at Ship Cove here in 1770, and the Sounds remain a major route for inter-island ferries crossing Cook Strait, alongside significant mussel and salmon farming. The Queen Charlotte Track winds along the ridgelines above the water. In Fly South, there's no single 'right' way through the Sounds - follow whichever inlet catches your eye, and a short flight can easily turn into a long, winding chain of bays, ridges and hidden coves.
