Milford Sound / Piopiotahi

Piopiotahi has the kind of presence that makes you lower your voice without thinking. Water, granite and cloud meet in a narrow fiord beneath the unmistakable silhouette of Mitre Peak. It is a spectacular welcome to the deeper mysteries of Fiordland.

About Milford Sound / Piopiotahi

The Māori name Piopiotahi refers to a native bird, now extinct, said to have followed the demigod Māui here in mourning. The fiord sits among the wettest inhabited places on Earth, and its waterfalls respond dramatically to rain, sometimes appearing and swelling within the hour. In Fly South, Milford is best flown low and close: thread between Mitre Peak and the opposite wall, watch the cloud reveal and hide waterfalls as you pass, then choose between open ocean ahead or the deeper reaches of Fiordland behind.
