Paparoa is a wonderfully strange meeting of limestone, rainforest and Tasman surf. The coast looks as though it has been carved and stacked by a patient giant, then left for the waves to finish. It is wild, wet and full of delightful geological surprises.
About Paparoa National Park
The layered limestone formations at Punakaiki formed over millions of years and now erupt with spray at high tide, when swells force water through blowholes in the rock. The Paparoa Track, one of the newer Great Walks, crosses the range behind the coast. In Fly South, this is a narrow meeting of land and sea: follow the coast for sea stacks and wet green forest, then turn inland to see how quickly the coastal strip rises into the Paparoa Range.
