Te Anau

Te Anau has the relaxed confidence of a town that knows adventure begins just beyond its doorstep. It sits beside a huge lake with dark Fiordland ranges waiting across the water, and is the gateway to the legendary Milford Track. Stay a moment, breathe in the mountain air, then let the road or shoreline draw you west.

About Te Anau

Te Anau is the practical starting point for the Milford Track, New Zealand's best-known Great Walk, whose four-day route finishes at Milford Sound / Piopiotahi; the Kepler and Routeburn tracks are also within reach. The glowworm caves across the lake and the Milford Road's climb through the Eglinton Valley make excellent real-world detours. In Fly South, use Te Anau as a staging point for the southwest: follow the lake north, turn into the Eglinton Valley, or trace the road toward the mountains and deeper Fiordland.
