Fly South / Aotearoa New Zealand

The Catlins

The Catlins feel like the South Island has saved one of its gentlest wild corners for those willing to look a little farther. Rainforest spills toward a rough coast, waterfalls hide in the folds, and wildlife makes the shoreline feel properly alive. It is moody, green and wonderfully uncrowded.

About The Catlins

Nugget Point's lighthouse, the petrified forest at Curio Bay, and the yellow-eyed penguins that nest along this coast all reward a closer look. Purakaunui Falls, tucked into the forest, is one of the most photographed waterfalls in the country. In Fly South, the Catlins reward close attention: follow the irregular shoreline, search the forest for waterfalls, and turn inland over rolling green country for a softer, wilder edge to the South Island than the high mountains further west.
