Fly South / Launch point
Twizel
Twizel is a small high-country town with a big sweep of Mackenzie landscape around it. Built for hydro workers, it now feels like a friendly basecamp between tawny flats, brilliant canals and distant peaks. The sheer amount of sky here is reason enough to stop.
About Twizel
The area's canals, dug for the hydro scheme, run in bright, arrow-straight lines across the basin, and Twizel is also home to a conservation breeding programme for the kakī, or black stilt, one of the rarest wading birds in the world. In Fly South, Twizel is a great place to start when you want room to roam: the canals and hydro lakes give clean lines to follow, while the mountains draw the eye north toward Aoraki / Mount Cook country.
