Westland Tai Poutini National Park

Westland Tai Poutini is a place of astonishing contrasts: ice, rainforest and sea all crowd together within a short distance. The glaciers seem to tumble out of the high Alps toward a green world that belongs in another climate entirely. It is one of New Zealand's most thrillingly unlikely landscapes.

About Westland Tai Poutini National Park

Both glaciers have retreated significantly in recent decades due to climate change, though they remain among the most accessible in the world. Nearby Lake Matheson is famous for its mirror-still reflections of Aoraki / Mount Cook on a calm morning, and the Ōkārito wetland protects the largest unmodified area of its kind in the country, along with a population of rare kiwi. In Fly South, this park is defined by contrast: follow rivers from high ice down through dense forest to the sea, watching the land change from bright glacier gravel to deep green canopy as you descend.
