Fly South / Launch point
Westport
Westport has a sturdy, salt-air character shaped by river, harbour and forested hills. The Buller reaches the Tasman here with long beaches and moody weather close at hand. It is a fine place to feel the West Coast's independent spirit.
About Westport
The Denniston Plateau above town was once home to a famous incline railway used to lower coal wagons down a near-vertical drop to the coast, and Cape Foulwind nearby hosts a fur seal colony on its rocky coastline. In Fly South, Westport opens naturally in three directions: inland toward the ranges, along the Buller River, or out over the coast and its long beaches - a strong base for exploring the northern West Coast without a fixed route.
